| .: Alanis Awarded by United Nations |
| The 27-year-old Ottawa
singer-songwriter is scheduled to be in New York City tomorrow to receive the Global
Tolerance Award from the Friends of The United Nations. "It is a real honor,"
Morissette told The Sun while in Toronto a few weeks ago to do some advance press for her
upcoming new album, Under Rug Swept, in stores Feb. 26. "I'm just viewing it as a very
sweet recognition of the contributions that I've made, and I also -- in the same breath --
say that I know that I'm certainly not alone in contribution land." She continued:
"There are just so many people that I know who contribute just as much as I do in
many different ways. And sometimes in very, very private, non-public ways. "But I
also know that I'm in a position to be able to do it in a way that may inspire others to
join in as well, just through sharing it publicly. So it's really inspiring to me in terms
of my wanting to keep raising the bar on the level of contribution. It's pretty
amazing."
Primarily,
Morissette is being honoured "for making outstanding contributions to promote
tolerance through the arts." Morissette's most recent benefit appearances have
included the John Lennon tribute in New York City, Toronto's own Music Without Borders
concert and Seattle's Groundworks. The award presentation will take place at the UN
delegates' dining room at headquarters in New York. When asked if she was
nervous about going to the United Nations, Morissette replied: "I still get nervous
when I speak publicly. When I spoke to Congress, I was kind of nervous, but it's not an
intense nervousness."
